Ellen Burnstyn Joins Cast in USA’s ‘Political Animals’ (UPDATE: New Featurette)

[UPDATE #5] David Monahan (Dexter) and Blair Brown (Fringe) are joining the cast of the much-anticipated USA series  Political Animals.

[UPDATE #4] Acting dynasty Vanessa Redgrave has joined the six-episode series Political Animals as Diane Nash, “a lesbian Supreme Court Justice who is a friend of Secretary of State Elaine Barrish (Sigourney Weaver).” Redgrave previously appeared on FX’s Nip/Tuck and 2009 miniseries The Day of the Triffids.

[UPDATE #2] May 7, 2012 – This cast just keeps getting better with the addition Dylan Baker. He’ll be recurring as Vice President Fred Collier,” supporting President Paul Garcetti (Adrian Pasdar). Described as a seemingly sweet man, Collier is a fierce combatant of Elaine’s with secrets that will ultimately be revealed.”

[UPDATE #1] May 3, 2012 – Heroes alum Adrian Pasdar has been added to the cast of USA’s Political Animals joining Ellen Burnstyn and Sigourney Weaver. The series will also debut its six-episode first season July 15. [TV Line]

[Original] The indelible Ellen Burnstyn will be joining USA Network’s Political Animals. The Oscar, Emmy and Tony award-winning actress will be joining a cast that already includes Sigourney Weaver, Carla Cugino and James Wolk. The series is being produced by Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark.

Political Animals centers on Elaine Barrish (Sigourney Weaver), a divorced former first lady and current secretary of state, who is struggling to keep her family together while simultaneously dealing with the crises of the State Department. She finds an unlikely ally in a famous D.C. journalist, played by Carla Gugino, who has spent her career tearing Elaine down.

Burnstyn will be playing Margaret Barrish, “the mother to Weaver’s character. She’s being described as a tough Chicago broad and one-time Vegas showgirl with biting tongue and sharp wit.” The series also stars James Wolk (Lone Star) as Barrish’s chief of staff, Brittany Ishibashi (Fairly Legal) as Douglas’ fiancée and Sebastian Stan (Gossip Girl) as Barrish’s son.

Berlanti will write and direct the pilot.
