Agent Coulson Lives! Clark Gregg to Star In Marvel’s ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ TV Series
Raise your hands if Agent Coulson’s death in the Avengers broke your heart. Oh, everybody? Well, grab some of that Joss Whedon-brand super-glue and fix yourself up because Agent Coulson is back! Coulson, played by Clark Gregg, was recently revealed by Whedon to be the star of Marvel’s heavily anticipated Avengers-spinoff TV series at a recent Marvel TV panel. And the best part? They had been planning it all along. Those sneaky heads at Marvel were planning six different ways to yank at our heartstrings the whole time, but… after this announcement, I’m too happy to be mad.
Forget the next Thor movie, the next Captain America, the mysterious Guardians of the Galaxy, and heck, even forget Avengers 2. With the news that not only will there be a weekly dose of Marvel in our homes next year, but that it will be led by the underdog fan-favourite from the previous films, this new S.H.I.E.L.D. show is shaping up to be something special.
At the panel, Gregg was brought onstage while they played an Agent Coulson memorial video, only to be interrupted by an onscreen Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige (wearing a “Coulson Lives” t-shirt). Said Whedon:
“We all love Clark Gregg, there’s no doubt about that. From before we made ‘The Avengers,’ we discussed whether there was a way for him to be a part of the Marvel Universe, perhaps a part of a TV show even after his death. …The fact of the matter is, as much as we love him, now that I’m really running Marvel, I like to keep a type of artistic integrity, which means we don’t stretch the bounds of reality. …He’s headlining the S.H.I.E.L.D. show and always was!”
With potential for serious cameos from the Avengers cast, and introduction of some new characters from Marvel’s huge roster, there is plenty of momentum behind this series. Plus, it it means Cobie Smulders might not have to leave our TV screens after How I Met Your Mother ends this year.
