Tom Cruise and Armie Hammer On Board Ritchie’s ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E’

Armie Hammer is set to star with powerhouse Tom Cruise as a super agent in The Man from U.N.C.L.E, a remake of a 1960s television series. Guy Ritchie is directing the film for Warner Bros.

Actors Robert Vaughan and David McCallum played United Network Command for Law Enforcement (hence U.N.C.L.E) agents in the original television show. They fought the evil forces of Thrush with their gizmos, senses of humor and of course, charm.

Tom Cruise loves his science fiction. Not only did Universal Pictures’ Oblivion opening weekend overseas box office gross $61 million, but the actor will star in Warner Bros. adaptation of Yukikaze, “a big-scale film based on a series of Japanese sci-fi novels” from author Chohei Kambayashi.

Tom Cruise is building himself an action/sci-fi future for his acting career and no one should stop him. These kinds fo roles feels great and play well into the recent trend (see Liam Neeson, Daniel Craig) and Oblivion fints into that mold rather well. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film is an original story form Kosinski and comic creator Arvid Nelson. And it showcases Morgan Freeman looking even more badass than usual. Having been really late to the game, I’ve recently watch Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (directed by Brad Bird) and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. Nothing too overtly cartoonish with its villains (like in the first three entries), but capitalizing on the success of J.J. Abrams “retooling”, the film was a creative success. Tom Cruise leads the franchise as Ethan hunt and he’s been thinking about continuing with Mission: Impossible 5.

His upcoming roles in action films (Jack Reacher) and the sci-fi infusion (Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion) should really help build him profile as the “go to” star in the foreseeable future once again. No doubt about it. Not to mention Van Helsing, a fifth Mission: Impossible and the remake of The Magnificent Seven. Oh, and the Cruise-starring film All You Need Is Kill begins production today.
