Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone’s “Grudge Match”
Jake LaMotta and Rocky Balboa in the ring together for the first time? The result could be less climactic than you expected. Sly Stallone and Bobby De Niro are reportedly in talks to star in the new comedy, Grudge Match, about two aging boxers who step into the ring one last time for a final “grudge match.” The most recent script was drafted by Entourage creator Doug Ellin, the film is set to be directed by Peter Segal (Nutty Professor II: The Klumps…50 First Dates…) and is being produced by Mark Steven Johnson (Daredevil…Ghost Rider…), so this film is clearly not Oscar bait.
To be fair, the potential match up of the Bronx Bull and the Italian Stallion is definitely juicy enough to consider, but I’m certain Robert “greatest-actor-of-his-generation” De Niro, and the king of the underdogs, Sylvester Stallone, are getting paid enough to stoop to this level.
The real question remains, of course, which of these veterans would win this Grudge Match? Sly’s definitely got the physical edge (he’s in great shape for the release of the Expendables 2 this summer) and the experience (6 Rocky films to date), but Robert must have a few tricks up his sleeve. That being said, Sly’s been punched in the face so many times he’s probably numb and therefore unstoppable.
Judge for yourself, De Niro stars next in Red Lights (alongside Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy), while Stallone will appear in The Expendables 2 (alongside, *ahem*, Statham, Li, Lundgren, Van Damme, Norris, Willis, Schwarzenegger, Couture, Crews, and Hemsworth….phew).
