Dream Casting: David Lynch’s Unproduced ‘One Saliva Bubble’

What would you say (or do) for a new David Lynch film? Just about anything, we’d hope. The auteur’s last theatrical feature film was Inland Empire way back in 2006. Since then, he’s marketed his own brand of coffee beans, released a highly disturbing music album titled “Crazy Clown Time”, a bunch of short videos and recently released the documentary Meditation, Creativity, Peace. Sometimes you wonder whatever happened to those unproduced projects Lynch must’ve had. Lo and behold, we’ve got One Salive Bubble.

Dream Movie Cast: Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Napoleon’, Produced By Steven Spielberg

If you’re a fan of either Steven Spielberg or Stanley Kubrick, I’m sure the news this past wouldn’t have passed by your screen at least once. The Steven Spielberg is sticking his hands back into the Kubrickian well to hopefully bring Napoleon to the small screen as a mini-series. The project is likely to be produced and broadcast on HBO, because honestly, who else would green-light the project anyways? And as our mantra goes, we’ve got some casting suggestions for you to entertain.

Exclusive: Dream Casting ‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’

BioWare’s 2003 RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic allowed gamers to delve deeply into a previously unexplored time period of the Star Wars universe.  Set 4,000 years before the events of A New Hope, the game thrusts players into the midst of a colossal conflict between the Republic and the Sith.  The characters all have extensive backstories and unique personalities and the epic quest they embark upon dwarfs even the Lord of the Rings films in scope and stakes.  The game takes full advantage of the vast Star Wars mythos and delivers a fresh yet familiar take on the universe George Lucas bestowed unto the world.  The compelling story, distinct and interesting characters, superb voice acting, and classic Star Wars locales culminate in a tremendously immersive experience.  This is easily one of the best video games I have ever played and the only RPG I ever finished.  That is, until the sequel came out.  With Disney’s recent announcement of standalone Star Wars films in the works, it is an apt moment to examine how a KotOR movie could look.

With a smash-hit Susan Boyle stage musical, I Dreamed a Dream, currently conquering the UK, it’s inevitable that Hollywood would soon get to dreaming about cashing in on the action. And so it’s come to pass, with a biopic of the rags-to-riches talent show megastar in the pipeline. Various names have been flagged up, including Kathy Bates, Kathy Burke and Julie Walters (Boyle herself suggested that last one). But if those estimable actresses plead previous engagements, here are some other possibilities.

Enough with all the troubled musician biopics. We’ve all see the humble beginnings, the struggle for success in the face of adversity, the eureka moment of writing their big hit, and of course, the money, love and drug problems. It’s not that these themes are uninteresting, it’s just that they’ve become so cookie cutter, so perfectly molded to the Hollywood Oscar-bait drama, that it has become boring. What we need now is to see the stakes raised, the craziness increased, and the danger quadrupled; we need a rock band biopic, and what better band to fill that void than Led Zeppelin.

‘The Breakfast Club’ – Dream Casting a Remake…

Ever since Wet Hot American Summer poked fun at the not-so-adolescent actors playing teenagers in the movies, there is an undeniable temptation in following this legacy in the casting of just about any remake of a popular teen flick. That being said, trying to recast such an iconic film like The Breakfast Club, it seems misguided to follow this route. Part of the appeal of the film was not only that the actors LOOKED like teenagers but were young, upcoming actors on the verge of “making it”. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, directors of 21 Jump Street, have already demonstrated their talent with both comedy and remake potential. Though in that case, credit is very much due to a strong screenplay, there is no denying that it is their pacing and directorial flair that elevated the film to new levels of enjoyment. It is also their background in animation that gives their pacing a bit more punch, as they don’t see live action as being limited to the confines of our reality.

Re-Casting Roman Polanski’s ‘Carnage’

I recommend you watch Roman Polanski’s Carnage. Like all his movies, whether it be the great Chinatown or the less-great Oliver Twist, it is sustained by a muscular sense of storytelling, deft acting, and a compelling use of evocative cinematography. The story revolves around two couples meeting to have a civilized discussion, accompanied by apple-pear cobbler, about a playground fight between their sons, which left one of them with two fewer teeth.

Dream Movie Casting Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Bio-Shock’

On one hand, you have Bio-Shock, one of the most iconic visual worlds ever conceived by video game designers, and on the other hand you have Guillermo Del Toro a devoted practitioner of practical effects. Seems like a strange match? To imagine the real-world version of Bio-Shock is to understand not only its design as a game, but to understand how its rich back story contributes to its atmosphere and design. It is not merely a first person shooter, but a high-concept science fiction scenario set in the past. Though far removed from our version of history, it is nonetheless ingrained with the imagery, textures and cultural flourishes of the late 1950s, an era that existed far before computerized effects. The image of the Little Sisters, ghost-like genetic shells for ADAM, similarly feels at home in his oeuvre which includes movies like The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth, which examine childhood plagued by horror and violence.

Part One: It’s Crime Fighting Time.

Based on the 1988 action figure line C.O.P.S. ‘N’ Crooks, C.O.P.S. was a main staple of Saturday morning cartoons, living on in reruns through most of the ’90s. However, the show’s name was later changed to CyberCOPS, after the debut of the reality show Cops (bad boys, bad boys). The cast consisted of the most masculine officers of the law hands could draw, from Beat Cops to Texas Rangers,  working the streets of Empire City in the not-so-distant future of 2020 (they even had an RCMP Mountie, Agent Yukon, for a single episode). Their nemesis? Big Boss, a sizable crime lord who rules with a literal iron fist, aided by henchmen with names like Buttons McBoomBoom, Ms. Demeanour, and Turbo Tu-Tone.

Arturo Gatti Dream Casting for ‘The Fighter’ Sequel

With Mark Whalberg returning as Mickey Ward in the rumored Fighter sequel, boxing fans are itching to find out who will play his opposite Arturo “Thunder” Gatti. Very few details are known on the film which is supposed to be based on the three infamous battles Ward & Gatti faced against each other. Gatti’s casting is especially meaningful after the champions untimely death in 2009.

They’ll have to do a heck of a job finding the right lead as it will be pivotal to the movie. Whalberg said in an interview “We left out the Aturo Gatti fights for a reason…Because that’s for ‘Fighter 2′. We’re not going to do ‘Fighter’ 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8, but we’re gonna do 2. We’re gonna do the Ward/Gatti trilogy.”.

Dream Movie Casting: Fred Armisen in the True Story of Abner Jay

Fred Armisen is a sketchy guy.

This is not an insult, it’s just that his comedy relies heavily on sketch’s. His skits on Saturday Night Live and Portlandia usually depict oddball characters, some fictional, others grounded in reality & current events (see Obama) .

He’s known to have a flair for showbiz related subjects & characters. There’s Fericito, a Venezuelan nightclub comedian who was a regular on Saturday Night Live and showed up in Wilco’s documentary I Am Trying to Break Your Heart. More recently, there’s Garth from SNL’s Week-End Update where duo Garth & Kat (Kristen Wig) sing unrehearsed tunes to Seth Meyers’ dismay.

Dream Movie Casting: ‘Expendabelles’

With the success of Stallone’s Expendables franchise, it’s only natural that imitators will come knocking. But at least here’s one that sounds pretty damn exciting: Adi Shankar (producer of The Grey and Killing Them Softly) is developing an “Expendabelles” film, with an all-female cast, selecting up-and-comer Dutch Hamilton to write a treatment.
